Vedic Maths can help improve math score of Australian kids

Did you know Australia is experiencing a significant drop in teenage maths proficiency ? As per latest PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) report, in the last two decades Australia’s rank has come down from 11th to 29th in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) rankings. With New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland just able to meet the average score, overall Australian kids are falling behind by a full school year in maths. It is a matter of concern particularly in a global economy where Aussie kids will compete with other kids from across the world. Can Vedic Math play a role here to change the trend to improve maths score ?

What is the reason behind consistently declining score ? Is it because we are not giving students the required skills or students are developing anxiety/fear of maths or the time has come to change the style of teaching maths to make it more interesting ? Maths should be taught in a more engaging style where kids can apply simple formulae or concepts in real world, make maths more visual, teach simple tips and tricks to improve the calculation speed and do a basic validation on answer to avoid silly mistakes.

Often the long procedures to derive an answer reduces the attention span which results in building fear for maths.As the children see a large number, they get scared with the long process of calculation involved and thus, either do not attempt the question or make a mistake during the process which result in an incorrect answer.

Can Vedic Maths be a Solution ?

A solution to this issue can be found in Vedic Mathematics. It is the world’s fastest mental maths system. The key features that help the children are:
• Removes the fear of Maths
• It can be learnt in relatively short span of time to the standard maths practices.
• It improves the ability to do mental calculations thus, improves concentration.
• The shortcut methods increase the speed and accuracy and so increases the confidence.
• Vedic Maths increases the mental agility and improves the academic performance.

Moreover, the faster calculation process reduces the use of electronic devices to calculate which otherwise hinders the mental ability to deal with numbers.

Vedic Maths History

Vedic Maths is the world’s fastest mental math system. It is a collection of invaluable techniques that can profoundly improve your speed, understanding, and performance in mathematics. It is supposedly an ancient system of calculation which comes from the Vedas (the four collections forming the earliest body of Indian scripture), more specifically the Atharva Veda. It was revived by Indian spiritual guru and mathematician Jagadguru Shri Bharati Krishna Tirtha ji between 1911 and 1918. He published this work in a book called Vedic Mathematics in 1965. It comprises 16 sutras (formulae) and 13 sub sutras

How Vedic Maths Tricks Speed Up Calculation

See some examples below:

Square of a number which ends with 5
Write square of 5 (which is the last digit) in the answer on the right side. Now multiply the first digit of the number (like 4 in 45, 9 in 95) with number incremented by 1 (like number next to 4 is 5, number next to 9 is 10).

Square of a generic number – Square of 96

CONVENTIONAL METHOD

VEDIC MATHS METHOD

This technique will help you get the answers super quick without any lengthy calculations.

Step 1. The closest power of 10 to 96 is 100. Hence, we take 100 as the base.

Step 2. 96, being 4 less than 100, we take 4 as the deficiency.

Step 3. Decrease the number (of which we need to find the square) by the deficient number i.e., 4. So, 96 – 4 = 92. This resultant number will be the left side of final answer.

Step 4. For the right side of the final answer, just place the square of the deficient number, i.e., square of 4 which is 16. Here, 16 is already a 2 – digit number which equalizes the number of zeroes in the base i.e., 100.
Note: When calculating this step, take care that number of digits of the squared number i.e., 09 must equalize the number of zeroes in the base i.e., 100. We took 100 as a base which contains 2 zeroes. So, the square of 3 will be 09 and not 9.

Step 5. By combining the resultants of Step 3 and Step 4, our answer 9216.

Subtraction using Vedic Maths Sutra

Sutra / Formulae – Subtract all digits from 9 and last digit from 10.

Example 1: 1000 – 217

now apply Vedic sutra on 217 (9-2=7, 9-1=8, 10-7=3)

=> 1000 – 217 = 783

Example 2: 1000 – 762

now apply Vedic sutra on 762 (9-7=2, 9-6=3, 10-2=8)

=> 1000 – 762 = 238

Vedic Maths is important for those who love maths to be more creative and for those who want to grasp the concepts from the age-old world’s fastest mental maths system to remove the fear of maths. There is no age for learning, however, to understand the concept of sutras given in Vedic Mathematics the recommended starting age is 10 or Grade 5. Students in higher classes or preparing for competitive exams, working professionals, can also equally benefit from this course.
