What is Phonics & The Four Types of Phonics
What is phonics?
Phonics is how children learn to read. It teaches them the link between the sounds we say and the letters we write — so instead of memorising whole words, they learn to sound words out and read them for themselves.
It’s the foundation of confident reading, spelling and clear speaking, which is why schools around the world teach it. In our live one-to-one classes, a friendly tutor guides your child through it gently, with songs, games and stories that make learning feel like play.
The Four Types of Phonics
- Synthetic Phonics: Children learn each letter sound and blend them to read a word — /s/ /i/ /t/ /p/ becomes “ship”. It’s the most structured, research-based method, and the one used in schools.
- Analytic Phonics: Children look at whole words and spot shared sounds — noticing that “pat”, “pen” and “park” all begin with the same /p/ sound.
- Analogy Phonics: Children use words they already know to read new ones — knowing “look” helps them read “book” and “cook” through word families.
- Embedded Phonics: Sounds are taught gently within real stories and reading, as they naturally come up.

Syllabus
A clear, step-by-step path from first sounds to confident reading — your child moves up one stage at a time.
Each stage takes approximately 10–14 classes at two classes a week. The exact pace depends on your child’s age, starting point and how quickly they like to go.
Stage 1: Sounds & Letters (approx. 10–14 classes)
Tune into sounds and learn letter-sound links.
- Listening, rhythm and rhyme (early sound awareness)
- The single letter sounds (s, a, t, p, i, n and the rest)
- Recognising and saying each sound clearly
- Oral blending — hearing sounds come together
Stage 2: Games & Interactivity (approx. 12–16 classes)
Read and spell simple words.
- Blending sounds to read CVC words (cat, dog, sun)
- Breaking words into sounds to spell them
- First common “tricky” words (the, I, to, no)
- Reading simple captions and labels
Stage 3: Digraphs & Longer Words (approx. 10–14 classes)
Tackle trickier sounds and longer words.
- Consonant digraphs — sh, ch, th, ng
- Vowel digraphs — ai, ee, oa, oo
- Consonant blends — st, tr, fl
- Reading and spelling longer words
Stage 4: Fluency & Confident Reading (approx. 10–14 classes)
Read smoothly, with understanding.
- Split digraphs (the “magic e” — a_e, i_e, o_e)
- Alternative spellings for the same sound
- Reading sentences and short books aloud
- Comprehension — understanding what they read
